The lack of sufficient means of communication is among the most decisive factors for poverty in rural areas. To remedy this situation the Suisse Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) initiated a tool for communication among the people of the region and therefore Radio Mampita (translated as “transmission of messages”) is established in December 1997. It is the first radio in the region that is run by farmers.
The Association Mampita is established officially on 10 of May 1998 in order to manage the radio. The Association regroups the farmers who are also members and hence benefit from the radio as well as participate in manage it.
Revision of internal structures of the association to make sure that the farmers are included in the association and in the management
The renewal of the technical equipment is realized with the support of the Intercooperation Suisse
Radio Mampita is highly valued by the farmers in the region which is depicted by the growing number of members; there are 80 basis groups in 2005. Step by step Radio Mampita gets closer to its financial autonomy despite certain difficulties. In 2005, 85 percent of the radio’s expenses were covered.
The technical quality of the radio’s broadcastings decreased in 2005 and 2006 due to the poor condition of the material. The material was again renewed in 2007. This renewal was accompanied by a new program that was put in practice in 2006 and by the restructuring of the staff. Fortunately the number of basis groups increased.
-2009 Institutions that have specialized in technical knowledge and management were consulted and therefore the quality of the radio could be further improved.
-2011 The self-financing of the radio is stabilized. The revenues grow steadily as the production and the sale of announces, broadcasts and commercials increases. In addition the number of local and regional partners grows steadily. This reflects a strong appreciation by the partners as well as a good holding in the population. With the help of the German embassy additional equipment was installed and a professional education was financed.
The new building is finished in 2013 which was realized with the help of the German embassy in 2012 and 2013. This signifies another step towards a long-term economic stability. This well-located site is also of advantage for the farmers who combine their work at the market with a visit of Radio Mampita in order to turn in their announcements and dedications. Additionally, the new building allowed the construction of another small studio where the shows are being produced.
In July 2015 the BD has confirmed the statute.
